President Donald Trump announced what he described as the most severe economic operation ever imposed on a country, accusing Iran of rejecting opportunities for a negotiated deal and declaring that the United States would pursue unprecedented economic warfare and isolation.
Trump said the measures would target Iran’s financial lifelines, including oil smuggling, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies and other channels supporting the Iranian economy. He also warned that countries, businesses and financial institutions that assist Iran could face “tremendous economic consequences.”
Trump said, “Today, I am also announcing that ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.”
The announcement comes as Trump claimed Iran’s military capabilities and economy had been severely weakened. He said the United States and its allies must work together to isolate Iran and prevent it from projecting power abroad.
Trump reiterated that Iran “will never have a nuclear weapon,” framing the new measures as part of a broader campaign to pressure Tehran.
